Book Review: The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

The Woman in Cabin 10The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I loved this book – very clever plot, well executed and the detailed descriptions of the voyage at sea made me seriously seasick!

The story is written as a ‘closed circle mystery’ a la Agatha Christie, where the reader knows that one of the people on board has been killed and one of them must be the killer. But not all is as it seems and there’s a great twist about half-way through, which was the point at which I was truly gripped. The last third of the book is excellent - frantic, twisty and never on solid ground. The narrative from the lead character, Lo, is supported by news insertions and emails which throw what we think we know into disarray. Very well done.

The story involves Lo, recently traumatised by a break-in at home, who has been sent by the magazine she works for to cover a celebrity maiden voyage of a small luxury liner. She turns up distracted, shaken, taking anti-depressants and rather too keen to have a drink. Rather like Christie’s novel, ‘4.50 from Paddington’, Lo thinks she witnesses a murder, but no one appears to be missing and no one believes her.

The story is driven by Lo’s refusal to be seen as ditzy and unreliable and her refusal to relive the role of the victim. She feels compelled to find the truth and through a combination of hidden doors and passageways on the small vessel and various passengers with something to hide, the mystery unfolds.

The voice of the Lo is similar to those in another Ruth Ware book I enjoyed, In a Dark, Dark Wood, so if you liked that you’ll love this one.
